Privacy policy

This is a translation for convenience. If it differs from the Spanish version at jale.cab/privacidad, the Spanish version applies.

Jale is a free tool for ride-hailing drivers in Costa Rica. It tells you if an offer is worth it and keeps your car's books. It is independent: it is not affiliated with, authorized or endorsed by Uber or any other platform.

In short

What Jale reads and what you write down stays on your phone.
It doesn't keep riders' names, addresses or destinations.
It has no ads and doesn't sell or share your data.
Only three things leave the phone: crash reports, usage statistics if you accept them, and whatever you send to an online service if you use one. Details below.
If you sign up on jale.cab to hear when Jale is out, we keep your e-mail only for that, and delete it when you ask.

What Jale reads, and why

Jale never taps, accepts or declines anything in the platform's app: it only looks.

What leaves the phone

The price of gas. Jale checks RECOPE's public price page, at most every 12 hours. It sends nothing of yours.
Google's text reader (ML Kit) sends Google, encrypted, usage data: about the phone and the app, identifiers, performance, settings, size of what it processes, event type and error codes. According to Google, it doesn't share them with third parties. It doesn't send the image or the text read (Google's disclosure).
Crash reports (Firebase Crashlytics, by Google). If Jale crashes, it sends what the app was doing at that moment, the phone model, the Android and Jale versions, and an install identifier. It's used to fix the crash. It carries none of your trips, money or places.
Usage statistics (Firebase Google Analytics and Performance Monitoring), only if you accept them. Which screens and steps you use, and how long the badge over the offer takes (without the offer), to improve Jale. Off until you say yes, without the advertising identifier. There are never ads.
Remote settings (Firebase Remote Config, by Google). At most every 12 hours, Jale asks whether there are new settings, for instance to switch off a feature that is failing. It sends an install identifier; nothing of yours. Offline, Jale uses the settings it ships with.
Your account, if you create one. Jale works fully without an account. If you sign in with Google to use an online service, Firebase Authentication keeps your name, your e-mail and your Google identifier.
Online services, only when you use them. Some things need Jale's server (on Cloudflare). Before you use one, Jale tells you what it sends. The server keeps only what that service needs and keeps no log of requests.
Looking up your car by VIN. If you tap "Look up by VIN", Jale sends only the VIN to Jale's server, and the server asks NHTSA (the US vehicle registry). Neither the server nor Jale keeps it; what comes back (make, model, year) is a suggestion you decide whether to use.
Making sure only Jale talks to its server (Firebase App Check, by Google). Each request to the server carries a Google token saying it comes from Jale. In the store version, Google Play Integrity checks that the app and the phone are genuine, using signals from the phone and the app; not your trips, money or places.

The jale.cab website

Visits: Cloudflare Web Analytics counts how often pages are seen, from what kind of device and which country, without cookies and without following you from site to site (how it works). We don't know who you are.
Fonts: the site's fonts are served from jale.cab itself; your browser asks Google for nothing to show them.
Google Analytics, only if you say yes. The site asks. If you accept, Google Analytics counts which pages you see and where you came from, with a Google cookie, without Google signals or personalized ads. If you say no, nothing from Google loads. Change your mind with "Statistics", at the bottom of every page.

The "Notify me" list on jale.cab

Before Jale is out, you can leave your e-mail on jale.cab so we let you know.

What we keep: your e-mail (in lowercase); which platforms you drive for and what your car runs on, only if you mark them; the page you signed up from, the channel you came by if the link said so (for instance "whatsapp", from a link someone sent you) and the date. Nothing else: not your name, your phone or your IP address.
What for: to send you a welcome e-mail, write to you when Jale is out and, if we open early tests, invite you. What you mark about platforms and your car tells us what to get ready first. We don't send you ads, and the list isn't sold or shared.
Where: on Jale's server on Cloudflare (a D1 database), on servers that may be outside Costa Rica. When you sign up, we get a notice by e-mail with the same data, so we can write to you; that e-mail stays in Jale's mailbox (Gmail, by Google). The e-mails we send you are delivered by Resend, in the United States: it gets your address and the message only to deliver it, and we don't track whether you open it or what you tap.
For how long: while the list exists, or until you ask us to remove you.
How to leave: every e-mail we send has a link to leave, and your address is deleted. You can also write from that e-mail to soporte@jale.cab saying "remove me from the list", and we delete it. If one of our e-mails bounces (the address doesn't exist) or you mark it as spam, we take you off on our own too.
To stop bots: the form uses Cloudflare Turnstile. Turnstile checks signals from your browser to know you're a person, and Jale's server passes your IP address and Turnstile's answer to Cloudflare to confirm it. Your IP is also used for one minute to stop many tries in a row. Jale doesn't keep your IP (Turnstile's privacy).

Your backups

Android backs up nothing of Jale on its own.
If you save a backup (Settings → Your data), it's a file you choose where to keep: your Drive, your e-mail, a memory card. It isn't encrypted, so keep it where only you can see it. It has no photos or screens.

Deleting your data

Uninstalling Jale, or clearing its data in Android's Settings, deletes everything it kept on your phone.
If you created an account, delete it as this page says: the account goes, along with whatever the server has of yours.
The backups you saved are yours, and you delete them.
If you signed up to the jale.cab list, write to soporte@jale.cab and we'll remove you.

Your rights

Your trips, earnings and expenses are your personal data (Costa Rica's Law 8968 on the Protection of Persons regarding the Processing of their Personal Data). You can ask what data of yours Jale's server has (your account, or your e-mail on the jale.cab list), correct it or delete it, by writing to the address below.

Minors

Jale is for drivers. It isn't meant for anyone under 18.

Changes

If this policy changes, the date above changes and Jale tells you when you open it.
